Depok-Various student creative works, including films, photography, podcasts, Visual Communication Design (DKV), art, games and animation, were displayed on the stage of the 2023 Media Experience festival, Vocational Education Program, Universitas Indonesia (UI). The media festival is organized by the Media Production study program with the theme “Action, Reaction, Celebration!”. It is a platform for Media Production students to show off and encourage creative enthusiasm through talks with a number of figures.

Raditya Dika, famous comedian, writer, director and YouTuber, was also present. Radit provides tips for highlighting his persona as a creator. “The image built through our persona will make it easier for the audience to capture the message we want to convey. Another thing that is no less important is our ‘niche’ or curiosity about an object so that creators will enjoy the process of creating content,” said Radit. Building a characterful self-image is the first step so that the public can easily identify a creator’s work.

When a creator is firmly established in the creative industry, intellectual property (IP) is one of the aspects that needs to be paid attention to. Creativity is born from human intellectual abilities which involve an outpouring of time, effort and imagination. By having intellectual property rights, a work owned by someone will receive legal protection against plagiarism or other violations. It was conveyed by Nur Alif Ramadhan, creator of the animated series and comic book Dalang Pelo which now has 4.61 million subscribers on YouTube.

Alif believes, “The emergence of various digital platforms now makes it easier for us to channel IP, so that the work we create gets more attention from the public.” According to him, IP is not created, but is created by itself. To ensure enforcement of IP rights, the Government has regulated legal protection for intellectual property rights in Law Number 28 of 2014 concerning Copyright.

Art is a valuable work because it has the potential to become a promising commercial product. Bumilangit Entertainment, an entertainment company that creates popular comic characters such as Gundala, Sri Asih, and Si Buta dari Gua Hantu is a good example. Bumilangit Entertainment uses various forms of media to create works, from comics, films, animation, games, to souvenirs. It is proof that they are able to create superhero characters with nuances of Indonesian culture as well as being a sustainable economic resource.

Managing Editor of Bumilangit Entertainment, Rizqi R. Mosmarth, said that Bumilangit collaborated with many digital industries to introduce various hero characters in Bumilangit. “This collaboration can be a marketing strategy that creators can carry out to increase public attention and interest in the work they create. Apart from that, it is important for creators to continue to develop their creative work to make it more interesting,” said Rizqi.

Media Experience 2023 was held as a forum for students to practice their learning results in class, on November 13, 2023. UI Vocational Deputy Director for Education, Research and Student Affairs, Deni Danial Kesa, MBA., Ph.D said, “Through this activity, I hope the wider community knows that the works produced by UI Vocational students are ready to compete in the creative industry.
