Depok-Multimedia Broadcasting study program, Vocational Education Program, Universitas Indonesia (UI) collaborated with the Directorate General of Environmental Pollution and Damage Control (Ditjen PPKL) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) of the Republic of Indonesia to hold a talk show entitled “Becoming Brave and Young People in Multimedia Broadcasting Concerned with Environmental Conservation Issues.” The talk show which was held on December 13, 2023, brought two environmental activists as resource persons, namely Didi Kaspi Kasim, Editor-in-chief of National Geographic Indonesia, and Aie Natasha, the Indonesian G20 Presidential Y20 Team who is also an Environmental Diplomacy Program Activist.

The talk show which was held at the UI Vocational Auditorium aimed to involve young people starting to become aware of environmental conditions through stories from two speakers regarding their respective experiences while being part of environmental activism. It is also hoped that this interactive discussion will inspire the younger generation to actively play a role and voice environmental conservation efforts through creative work. The output of this creative work is in line with the Multimedia Broadcasting study program which hones skills to understand digital movements and package information according to media forms.

The talk show activity was opened by Sony Tri Bangun Laksana, Main Expert Environmental Impact Controller of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Sony expressed its hope for the younger generation who are familiar with technological developments to take advantage of their position as quality content creators who pay attention to the environment. “Awareness of the importance of protecting the environment and encouraging a spirit of conservation among the public is an important role for today’s young generation,” said Sony.

In line with what Sony said, Deni Danial Kesa, MBA., Ph.D, UI Vocational Deputy Director for Education, Research and Student Affairs, in his speech, also conveyed the job prospects for graduates of the Multimedia Broadcasting study program which can be used to voice and inform the vision and mission Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Deni said, “Hopefully with this public lecture, students will become more aware of their concern for our earth. Small steps are starting from the environment around us.”

During the discussion, Didi called for a new perspective to be given in order to save the environment, namely speaking out following the media. “A special view regarding environmental sustainability needs to be developed by every community. Social media can be used to encourage people to protect the environment. Social media has a very fast turnaround in trends and a diverse flow of information, reflecting the large number of content creators with the same target audience. So, consistency and something different attracts the audience to the content created,” said Didi.

Furthermore, Didi provided tips for planning content into three things, namely deep content such as feature production, light content such as tip content that can be implemented in the smallest scope, and live content so that the public knows about our existence.

Aie, who is also a content creator, said that one of the roles of a content creator is to influence the audience. Through the platforms they own, content creators can share information related to environmental issues that are related to their followers’ interests or hobbies. Aie explained, “One example is a content creator who promotes beauty products with environmentally friendly product branding accompanied by a key message on the environmental issues they want to convey.”
