Depok – Located at UI, Depok, the Communication Vocational Program of the University of Indonesia (UI), held the Millennials For Election:Futsal Competition 2019. This competition was held in order to campaign for the ANTI GOLPUT movement to young voters. The event, which lasted for two days, was fully supported by the Depok Regional General Election Commission (KPUD), which will be present to socialize how to vote at the polling station. The socialization will be held in the form of a Talk Show with the speakers: Valentino “Jebreeet” Simanjuntak; After Denberia Pakpahan, and Miss Indonesia 2019. The competition was attended by 16 teams from Greater Jakarta, by presenting around more than 500 participants and spectators for 2 days. “Millennials (17-37) are an important target for voters, because in this year’s election, it is estimated that there are around 80 million young voters. Global research (2009) shows that 76% of millennials see politics as important, yet only 24% are really interested in politics. Miller’s research in 2013 also found that even though millennials get a lot of information through the internet, this actually makes it difficult for them to choose which information is correct and appropriate, including information about politics, which leads to their reluctance to come to the polling station and vote for Golput,” said Devie Rahmawati, Head of the UI Communication Vocational Study Program, in her opening remarks at the event.
“Other studies show that there is a paradox of the flood of information. In the past, people who had a lot of information, would be more knowledgeable and confident to be able to make choices. This is not the case for millennials. For millennials, support by providing Likes, Comments, and Shares on social media is actually a real form of political support. Because they see the direct impact, when the comments or articles they send reap a lot of Likes, for example. It is different when they come to the polling station, where the results of the election cannot be exhibited to the public, making them feel that the political activities at the polling station have no meaning and “have no direct impact,” added Devie, who won Best Paper at KLicels Malaysia. “We invite the KPUD, because there is a lot of information that has not been conveyed, especially about the DPT issue, voting procedures, voting time and so on. This activity is expected to be an opportunity to “vent” to students and the general public, to ask questions and get complete information about April 17, in a relaxed atmosphere,” said Rangga Wisesa, Event Management Lecturer. “More than 500 participants and visitors are expected to become election information agents to their families and surrounding environment after participating in this event,” added Amelita Lusia, Head of the UI Vocational Broadcasting Laboratory

“This event was held to answer the anxiety of students about their generation who do not want to exercise their voting rights in the 2019 General Election. For this reason, we want to gather millennials through futsal competitions. Although this competition is for men, we are sure that female millennials will also take part in this event,” said Adel, Chairman of the Committee. “The competition will be closed by the ‘Voice of Millennials’ Talkshow which presents Gervando Jeorista, as well as Deddy Indrawan, as representatives of Millennial politicians, to persuade his people to come to the polling station. The talk show will raise the theme ‘The importance of Millennials’ votes in the 2019 General Election,” concluded Adel, a student of Public Relations Specialization, UI Communication Vocational Study Program.
