Depok-Social security has long been a fundamental pillar in modern society that plays a role in protecting the welfare of citizens. In line with the complex economic, health and security challenges in the world today, the importance of the social security system, especially in the world of work, is increasingly in the spotlight. Seeing these conditions, the Insurance and Actuarial Administration study program, Vocational Education Program, UniversitasIndonesia (UI) held a public lecture entitled “BPJS Ketenagakerjaan: Understanding the Benefits and How They Work” on October 12, 2023.
The public lecture also presented Pramudya Iriawan Buntoro, Director of Strategic Planning and Information Technology BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, an expert in the field of social security. Pramudya started the public lecture by explaining the definition of social protection and its philosophy. “Social protection is a set of public instrument protections to anticipate economic and social pressure resulting from lost or reduced income,” he said. He also explained that social protection can take the form of several programs such as income security, medical care, and family support.
On this occasion, he listed two models of social administration in the world historically, namely the insurance model and the redistribution model. “These two models have very different components. The insurance model aims to guarantee income protection in accordance with the level of wages or income whose focus is the labor market. “Meanwhile, the redistribution model aims to guarantee income protection at the subsistence or basic level and the focus is on the basic rights of the population,” said Pramudya.

Pramudya emphasized that the function of social protection is closely related to the life cycle of society in Indonesia. “Starting from early childhood to the elderly, each cycle has its own type of social security and contribution assistance for national health insurance,” said Pramudya. At the end of the public lecture, Pramudya explained the role of the Employment Social Security Administering Agency (BPJamsostek). “Social security has an important role in strengthening the country’s resilience, as a basic right for citizens providing certainty of social protection and welfare for all Indonesian people,” added Pramudya.
Head of the Department of Applied Administration and Business, Dr. Fia Fridayanti Adam, M.Si., said that the public lecture gave birth to many new insights for students. According to her, the role of social security is very important for every society. So, students of the Insurance and Actuarial Administration study program need to become agents of change who disseminate information related to social security. “In the future, students from the Insurance Administration and Actuarial study program will become graduates whose focus will be increasing awareness of social security in the community,” said Fia.
