Depok-In order to commemorate National Children’s Day which falls on July 23 every year, the Public Relations Vocational Student Association of the Universitas Indonesia (HM VOKHUM UI) held the PR Crayon 2024 activity at the Darul Ilmi Orphanage, Depok on August 4, 2024. PR Crayon is a work program under the Department of Arts and Culture and the Department of Social Community, HM VOKHUM UI which has a mission to provide hope, inspiration, and opportunities for children to move forward, overcome obstacles, and realize their dreams. Raising the problem of children aged 7-15 years who have difficulty in determining their dreams, this year’s PR Crayon carries the theme “Stepping Away to Achieve Goals”.

PR Crayon activities include the presentation of educational materials from students as the main event, mentoring, Do It Yourself (DIY) together, and interspersed with light games to invite children to actively interact. All of these activities apply the 21st Century Skills method to improve the skills needed by today’s generation, such as learning skills, literacy skills, and life skills. In the educational material presentation session, HM VOKHUM UI explained the importance of having ideals and how to achieve those ideals. Not only that, children are also taught how to grow motivation and apply it consistently.

The Head of HM VOKHUM UI, Akmal Zaidan, revealed that PR Crayon is an annual activity organized by students of the UI Vocational Public Relations study program, to provide a positive impact on the surrounding community. Focusing on children, the activity has been carried out in several places since 2021, such as the YBKN Al-Hasyim Orphanage, Jagakarsa (2021); Al Hayya Orphanage, Depok (2022); and Yasmin Orphanage, Depok (2023). Akmal said, “PR Crayon was carried out not only through the assistance of HM VOKHUM UI, but also through community support in the form of donations. The amount of donations collected was IDR 2,221,000.”

Another session that was no less interesting was the mentoring that was carried out together with the DIY together. In this session, children were directed to string bracelets or necklaces from beads while chatting with the committee about what had been learned from the previous material and telling about their dreams in the future. After that, it was continued with a session on making a hope tree. Children were invited to write down their impressions, messages, and hopes to motivate their lives in the future. Then, a game session was carried out by giving each group the opportunity to come forward and guess a profession and its role. This game helps train children to work together as a team in finding answers.

Director of UI Vocational Education Program, Padang Wicaksono, S.E., Ph.D, revealed that the positive activities carried out by UI Vocational Public Relations students are one of the places for them to learn, especially to develop their soft skills. In addition to classroom learning activities, UI Vocational students are also invited to contribute directly to the community through activities such as community service (pengmas). “UI Vocational continues to support every positive activity carried out by students that is beneficial to the wider community. Small steps such as sharing with those around them are one of the direct impacts implemented by UI Vocational to the community,” said Padang.

The 2024 Crayon PR activity was closed with a joint prayer session led by the management of the Darul Ilmi Depok Orphanage and the provision of donations and goodie bags for the children. “We would like to thank the UI Vocational Public Relations students for this very useful activity. We hope that this activity can provide positive encouragement to the children of the Darul Ilmi Orphanage not to give up in pursuing their dreams. Hopefully this activity can raise their spirits and motivation to move forward and achieve their dreams,” concluded Suti Ayu Purnama Sary, the management of the Darul Ilmi Depok Orphanage.
