Depok-In the current digital era, data is an important and crucial component for every company. The reason is, data is considered to have an important role in helping the decision-making process in a job. This is no exception in the creative industry, which has adapted many digital technologies for the needs of film, music and game production. The data, which is very large and complex and too much to analyze, is collected which then produces big data.

Big data can be used for various needs, such as customer analysis, compliance analytics, fraud analysis, operational analysis, and communication needs, for example adding new customers, retaining customers, and expanding the current customer base. In fact, in the academic world, big data can be used for lecture registration, payments, class participation, online learning, and assessments.

This data is cleaned, prepared and analyzed using data science, as well as collaborating with digital technology, such as artificial intelligence. The important role of big data in these various needs was conveyed by Prof. Juliana Sutanto, Ph.D, who is a Professor in Information Systems, Monash University, in an inbound lecture for the Media Production study program, Vocational Education Program, Universitas Indonesia (UI) entitled “Exploring Big Data, Visualization, Ethics” on March 27, 2023 online. The inbound lecture was packaged in the form of a Master Class and guided by one of the Media Production lecturers, Dr. Rahmi Setiawati, S.Sos., M.Si.

On this occasion, Prof. Juliana explained that big data comes from sensors, devices, video/audio, networks, log files, transactional applications, the web, and social media which is generated in real-time and has a very large scale. “Data analysis is a complicated step and takes a lot of time. With artificial intelligence, the data collected can be simplified and filtered as needed to be more effective.”

Furthermore, Prof. Juliana also explains how to visualize data so that it is easy to understand. Contextual information or metadata needs to be presented completely and comprehensively. Prof. Juliana also conveyed the importance of basic ethical concepts in presenting data. “Every data collected and processed needs to be checked first whether the data can be accounted for, accountable and has legal force,” said Prof. Juliana.

Meanwhile, Prof. Juliana also invited students to maintain the privacy of their data. According to her, various personal information should not be published. It is because currently there are many cases of illegal use of other people’s personal data.
