Depok-The issue of personal data security in bank accounts is one of the main problems for people in the banking world. It is because banking customer data contains personal and sensitive information that can be misused by other people for criminal acts. Without exception, banking customers, who are currently dominated by Generation Z as potential customers, need to increase their knowledge regarding customer data protection. Based on data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the financial literacy level of generation Z is low, namely 44.04% or 3.94% lower than the millennial generation.

Based on this phenomenon, the Financial and Banking Administration study program, Vocational Education Program, Universitas Indonesia (UI) held a community service activity (pengmas) entitled “Gen Z Savings Movement: Socialization of Legal Protection for Bank Customers” at SMAN 26 Jakarta. Also present at this activity were the Head of the Financial and Banking Administration Study Program, Vindaniar Yuristamanda Putri, S.I.A., M.M; lecturer in the Customer Service Practice course, Gayatri Rejeki, M.M; as well as representatives from SMAN 26 Jakarta.

The community service is the final project design Customer Service Practice courses for students to be applied directly to the community. Director of the UI Vocational Education Program, Padang Wicaksono, S.E., Ph.D, said that UI Vocational continues to strive to implement tridharma activities, one of which is community service, in accordance with the curriculum of each study program. “UI Vocational applies a practice-based curriculum that is in line with the needs of industry and society. So, the implementation of classroom learning can be felt directly by the community. I hope that this financial literacy can continue to other areas so that people receive positive benefits from the activities carried out by UI Vocational in an inclusive manner,” said Padang.

This activity, which is wrapped in the form of outreach, is an innovative initiative designed to strengthen financial literacy among the younger generation. Guided by students from the Financial Administration and Banking study program, the socialization provided practical insight into how to manage money wisely, rights and obligations as a customer, as well as best practices in banking. Most of the new Generation Z who will open savings at the bank are at high school or equivalent age. The hope is that they can save in banks which are more secure because they are protected by the OJK and the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS).

In her presentation, Vinda said that Indonesian banking is based on economic democracy by using the principles of trust, prudence, confidentiality and knowing your customers. “In accordance with Article 40 Paragraph 1 of Law no. 10 of 1998 concerning Banking, every bank is obliged to keep confidential information regarding depositors and their deposits. So, if a personal data leak occurs, the personal data controller is obliged to notify the personal data protection failure in writing, including handling and recovery efforts. Apart from that, the owner of personal data has the right to sue and receive compensation,” explained Vinda.

She added that legal protection for bank customers aims to create a banking environment that is stable, fair and just for all parties involved. It is important for building trust and integrity in the financial system, as well as increasing protection for customers in carrying out banking transactions.

Ayu, a student at SMAN 26 Jakarta, said that the socialization activity held on April 24, 2024, provided new insights for herself and her friends. According to her, banking digitalization has shortcomings such as data leaks. “Through this community service activity from UI Vocational, we learned a lot of new knowledge about the importance of protecting personal data for banking needs and how to report it if a data leak occurs,” said Ayu.

In this activity, the UI community service team also explained tips that must be followed as bank customers to avoid data leaks. Be careful when sharing personal data, such as the front page of your savings book, ID or ATM card. Apart from that, also periodically change the mobile banking password or ATM pin and be careful when using wireless networks (wifi) in public areas to carry out banking transactions via cellphone.
