Depok-Universitas Indonesia (UI) Vocational Education Program together with the UI Technical Implementation Unit for Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) held an outreach regarding canteen waste management in the campus environment. Located in UI Vocational Building B, the socialization which was held on February 16, 2024 invited all UI Vocational academics, such as lecturers, education staff, students and administrators. tenant in the Vocational Canteen. Also present were Eka Pradipta, S.Hut., M.Ars., Environmental Management Coordinator of UPT K3L UI as a speaker and other UPT K3L UI teams.

Eka explained that the waste pile at UI that will be sorted in 2023 will amount to 196 tonnes of organic waste, 32 tonnes of inorganic waste and 62.5 tonnes of residual waste. Based on this data, it was found that the landfill at UI Vocational reached 17.8 tonnes of organic waste, 2.8 tonnes of inorganic waste and 6.4 tonnes of residual waste as of 2023. “The waste management system at UI is carried out collaboratively with faculties/schools/vocational/Klinik Satelit, universities managed by the Directorate of Facilities Operations and Maintenance, as well as third parties. Starting from sorting and storing waste, transporting and processing waste, to processing residual waste produced by UI,” said Eka.

Based on the results of the UI K3L UPT inspection, there is a written SOP policy regarding reducing the use of single-use paper and plastic, as well as limiting the use of toxic and hazardous materials (B3) for food and beverage packaging in the UI Vocational environment. Beside that, the availability of human resources, facilities and infrastructure related to waste management has been fulfilled. In fact, UI Vocational has carried out education and outreach programs related to waste management. Grease traps for washing dishes and food raw materials for filtering leftover fat are also available in the Vocational Canteen environment. Then, a Temporary Waste Collection Site (TPS) which is more than 10m from the canteen is adequate.

Deputy Director for Resources, Ventures and General Administration, Priyanto, S.S., M.Hum., said that efforts to provide various facilities in the Vocational Canteen to manage waste are continuing. The results of inspections carried out by UPT K3L UI also become input for UI Vocational to improve the quality of waste management so that it is better. Priyanto added, “I hope that this socialization can increase the knowledge of all UI Vocational academics to participate in increasing self-awareness of the importance of waste problems in the surrounding environment.”

On this occasion, tenant managers in the Vocational Canteen were also invited to have two-way communication regarding the problems they experienced regarding waste management in the canteen. These various problems will immediately be checked and handled by the UI Vocational Facilities and Infrastructure Unit so that they are resolved properly.
