Depok-The Universitas Indonesia (UI) Vocational Education Program continues to promote the use of clean energy through the implementation of environmentally friendly technologies. One concrete step taken is the installation of an on-grid solar power plant on the roof of the UI Vocational Auditorium Building with a total capacity of 25.8 kWp by 2023.

The solar power plant generates 47,085 kWh of electricity per year, which can be used for various building operational needs, such as lighting and electronic equipment. By adding 10.8 kWp of power by 2023, UI Vocational demonstrates a concrete effort to strengthen the transition to renewable energy sources. The solar energy generated not only saves electricity consumption from conventional sources but also reduces carbon emissions and improves energy efficiency on campus.

Furthermore, UI Vocational is also developing a 4.4 kWp Wind Power Plant, which will be built in 2024 in a Green Open Space area. This wind turbine is capable of producing 8,030 kWh of energy per year, simultaneously diversifying clean energy resources within the UI area. In fact, the renewable energy production from these two power plants results in a 3.15% savings in total annual energy use.

Both solar and wind power plants are part of a clean energy system that produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation and utilizes renewable natural resources, namely solar and wind. Through this initiative, UI Vocational supports the national energy transition toward a more sustainable system and contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Clean energy, such as solar and wind power, offers several strategic benefits, including reducing dependence on fossil fuels, reducing carbon footprints, and increasing future energy security. Furthermore, its application in higher education reflects the university’s role as an agent of change, integrating science, technology, and environmental sustainability.
