Depok-Students of the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Vocational Education Program initiated the “Village Care Tourism Movement” to increase community capacity in tourism management, digital promotion, and awareness of environmental health and cleanliness.

One of the activities of the movement was carried out on Untung Jawa Island, Seribu Islands, DKI Jakarta, by a community service team from the UI Vocational Tourism Business Management study program student group on September 19-21.

Untung Jawa Island is a tourist village located in the waters of the Seribu Islands and has various tourism potentials, such as marine, historical, culinary, and others.

Untung Jawa Island also won third place in the 2021 Indonesian Tourism Village Award, as the island’s residents are predominantly employed in the tourism and micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSMEs) sectors. However, there is still a need for assistance in tourism management, digital branding, and increasing public health awareness.

The first activity was Pandu Paris, a seminar and workshop on tour guiding attended by local youth groups and tourism awareness groups (Pokdarwis). The event taught the community the basic competencies of a professional tour guide. A Beach Clean-Up was also held at Sakura Beach as a concrete demonstration of environmental awareness.

Next, public health-related activities were carried out, namely the Healthy Without High Risk of Disease (Sehati) and Bright Teeth activities. Sehati presented Dr. Wilma Fitriani Zahlul from the Untung Jawa Island Community Health Center who gave a seminar and accompanied by free health checks with several Physiotherapy students. Meanwhile, Bright Teeth is a dental hygiene education activity for children through interactive games and group tooth brushing. The children who attended also received toothbrushes and milk packages as a token of appreciation.

The final event in the series concluded with Digital Tourism (DigiTour), a seminar and workshop on digital marketing in the tourism sector. West Java Inspiration Ambassador Muhammad Muslih Nugraha, also a student in the UI Vocational Public Relations program, shared strategies for creating engaging digital content that can be applied by MSMEs and local tourism managers. Local residents were invited to create promotional content about the culinary delights, beaches, and tourist activities of Untung Jawa Island, as a hands-on experience from the workshop.

“MSMEs products and tourist destinations are inseparable. In fact, they reinforce each other. Through digital tourism, residents can leverage technology to introduce Untung Jawa Island and its unique products to a wider market,” said Muslih.

Each series of activities received a warm welcome from the community. The SEHATI program attracted 32 participants, while Gigi Berseri attracted nearly double the initial target.

“Thank you to the students who came to provide insight and assistance to us, especially in improving the tourism potential on Untung Jawa Island,” said Adi Pepen, Head of the Untung Jawa Island Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis).

Through these activities, UI Vocational students are committed to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Good Health and Well-Being (Point 3), Decent Work and Economic Growth (Point 8), and Sustainable Cities and Communities (Point 11).

The Head of the Tourism Business Management Study Program, Anisatul Auliya, S.SST.Par., M.Par., said that the activity was a learning platform for students to understand their role as agents of change in the tourism and social sectors.

“We hope that this spirit of collaboration and caring will continue to live on within the students and inspire the community to build independent and competitive tourism villages,” said Auliya.
