Depok-Technological transformation in the tourism world is no longer an option, but rather an urgent need so that tourism industry players can survive, compete, and meet the expectations of modern tourists who are increasingly digital and technology-aware. Based on data from the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in April 2024, the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia reached 1.07 million, an increase of 23.23% compared to the same period in the previous year. Seeing this high figure, digital technology plays an important role in the development of Indonesian tourism. The use of technology such as mobile applications, online booking systems, and social media makes it easier for tourists to plan and enjoy their trips. Thus, the integration of technology in the Indonesian tourism sector not only increases data efficiency and accuracy, but also enriches the tourist experience and strengthens the competitiveness of the national tourism industry.

This was conveyed by Reza Permadi, Operational Director of PT Atourin Teknologi Nusantara, at a guest lecture held by the Tourism Business Management study program, Vocational Education Program, University of Indonesia (UI), on March 19, 2025. On that occasion, Reza discussed various appropriate technologies outside of social media platforms that can strengthen connectivity between tourists and their destinations. For example, digital maps and navigation using Google Maps or Waze; artificial intelligence (AI) and chatbots using Tripadvisor or Atourin; or services using software such as Amadeus and booking.com.

In addition, there are a number of impacts caused by the presence of technology in the tourism industry. Reza said, “The advantages are easy access to information and booking; a richer and more interactive tourism experience; and business efficiency and new economic opportunities. Meanwhile, the challenges that arise, for example, the risk of overtourism due to popularity in online media; security of tourist data; to the environmental impact of digital infrastructure. So, we need to use technology in the tourism industry wisely.”

Head of the Tourism Business Management Study Program, Anisatul Auliya, S.ST.Par., M.Par., said that technology plays an important role in facilitating tourists. Various innovations such as AI, Augmented Reality (AR)/Virtual Reality (VR), Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain have brought major changes to the industry. “Through this guest lecture, students will learn the role of technology in the tourism industry. It is important for tourism industry players to maintain a balance between technology and the sustainability of tourist destinations. Hopefully, students will get insightful provisions to be implemented later when they enter the tourism industry, either during internships or after graduating from UI Vocational School,” concluded Auliya.
