Depok-Apart from excelling academically, the Universitas Indonesia (UI) provides opportunities for students to develop their potential in the arts, culture and sports. It was felt by Sangga Muara Putra, a student of the Tourism study program, Vocational Education Program, Universitas Indonesia (UI), so that he was still able to combine the academic and sports worlds, even more than that he was able to score achievements in the sports.

Not long ago, Sangga and the Batavia Demons team won the 2023 Singapore Lion City Cup tournament at The Rink, Singapore. Batavia Demons is the oldest ice hockey club in Indonesia and is Indonesia’s representative at the international level. Last year, they won the ice hockey tournament in Bangkok, Thailand.

According to Sangga, who holds the position of goalkeeper at the Batavia Demons, in the match against Mantis Vanguard which is the home team, the first game in the preliminary round ended with 4-4 points. “The next game, we won a landslide victory over Dons, a team from Canada, with 8-0 points and beat Hot Wheels, a team from Singapore, with 7-2 points,” said Sangga.

“The challenge that we face is against the Mantis Vanguard. It is because Mantis Vanguard is a senior national team, so that made us pessimistic. Of course, this victory and the previous wins have motivated us to continue to win other tournaments at a higher level,” said Sangga.

Sangga and the team managed to win with 11-1 points in the final round against Mantis Stealth. Strengthened by U-20 members, Sangga will return to participate in the ice hockey tournament at the World Champion Qualifiers Division IV championship which will be held in Mongolia on March 20, 2023, as the Indonesian national team.

Currently, as a vocational student who is required to do an internship, Sangga is a finance staff at a hotel. He mentioned that the challenge he is currently facing is dividing his time between ice hockey and internship. “Even in the midst of my busy schedule as an athlete, I still have to do my obligations as a student,” said Sangga.

Batavia Demons has won various competitions, including Indonesia Ice Hockey Tournament (IIHT) 2014 and 2015, Malaysia Ice Hockey Tournament (MIHT) 2015, Singapore Lion City Cup 2016 Ice Hockey Tournament, the 2022 annual Movenpick Land of Smiles Ice Hockey Classic Tournament tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, and finally the 2023 Singapore Lion City Cup tournament at The Rink, Singapore which was held on 15-20 February 2023.

UI Vocational Education Program Director, Padang Wicaksono, S.E., Ph.D, appreciated the student’s achievements and said, “Hopefully the achievements that Sangga has made can make UI and Indonesia proud. I am waiting for other achievements from Sangga and other students.”
