Depok-Media Production Study Program, Vocational Education Program of Universitas Indonesia (UI) held a webinar series titled Media Production Master Class on March 3, 2022. The Master Class as a regular webinar program from the Media Production study program discusses the production of works that uphold clarity of ideas, themes, technical quality, aesthetics, and professionalism in the creative industry.

As the start of the webinar series, the Media Production study program took the theme of the National Film Month Edition, by inviting the famous Indonesian Film Director and Creative Director, Riri Riza, as speaker. He is known as a reliable director with productions such as the film Sherina’s Adventure (2000), What’s Up with Love? (2002), The Dreamer (2009), Humba Dreams (2019), Paranoia (2021), and others.

The discussion, which was guided by the Head of the Media Production Study Program, Ngurah Rangga Wisesa, M.I.Kom., CICS, was also attended by Padang Wicaksono, S.E., Ph.D, Director of the UI Vocational Education Program; Hardika Widi Satria, S.Hum., M.Si., Secretary of the Department of Social Applied Humanities; lecturers, students, and the general public.

Riri Riza said that film is one of the media that can have a big impact on the society. “Film is a complete work, where all people’s emotions can be described in one period of time by visualization through audio visuals. One of the important capital needed in the clarity of ideas or ideas in filmmaking is education. Through education, we are encouraged to learn about our identity and our nation, so that the ideas we create can be conveyed properly to the community,” Riri explained.

The development of the film industry in Indonesia is currently increase rapidly. Many female directors, screenwriters, and producers have begun to show their existence in the Indonesian film industry, such as Kamila Andini (film director of Yuni (2021), Mountain Song (2019), Sekar (2018), and others); Gina S. Noer (screenwriter of First, Second & Thrid Love (2022), Cemara’s Family (2019), Two Blue Stripes (2019), and others); also well-known female producers who have been in the Indonesian film industry for a long time, such as Mira Lesmana (film producer of What’s Up with Love? (2002) (2002), The Rainbow Troops (2008), Glorious Days (2019), and others); also Shanty Harmayn (film producer of Garuda di Dadaku (2009), The Dancer (2011), Impetigore (2019), and others).

Furthermore, Riri explained that in making or producing a work, especially a film, the thing that should be considered is originality. “To make a film that can have an impact on society, we need originality that shows our identity as the Indonesian. Of course, this originality also needs to be accompanied by a broad global market share,” he said.

“Indonesian films are part of Indonesian history. I hope that students and film enthusiasts can continue to support the sustainability, presence, and development of Indonesian film, not only watching it, but also discussing and producing the film,” concluded Riri.
