Depok-Nowadays, Indonesian people are starting to switch to new ways of consuming content. One of today’s prestigious platforms is over-the-top (OTT), which is a streaming content service provider platform that can be accessed via various devices anytime and anywhere. Based on Future of TV 2023 research conducted by The Trade Desk, almost one in three Indonesians enjoy OTT streaming. In fact, Indonesians consume an average of 2.9 hours of OTT content every day.

Seeing this phenomenon, the Media Production study program, Vocational Education Program, Universitas Indonesia (UI), held collaborative community service activities with one of the leading platforms in Indonesia, namely Vidio. The activity, which was held at the UI Vocational Auditorium on May 14, 2024, presented Hermawan Sutanto, Managing Director of VIDIO, and Diah Lasvita, VP of Originals VIDIO, as speakers guided by Beverly Gunawan, News Presenter Liputan 6, and Ngurah Rangga Wiwesa , M.I.Kom., Head of the Media Production Study Program, as moderator.

Wrapped in the form of a talk show, the first session began with Hermawan Sutanto who presented material entitled “Local OTT Streaming Hero: Beating Global Giants in Our Own Territory”. Hermawan explained the “race car” growth framework that Vidio uses as an OTT development strategy, namely growth engine (virality, collaboration, paid marketing, SEO and sales); turbo boosts (organizing big events, marketing campaigns, sponsoring big events and working with influencers); and lubricants (increasing activation, conversion, retention, and price).

Hermawan said, “Vidio continues to implement these three points to compete with various other OTTs in Indonesia to provide interesting and enjoyable streaming services for consumers.”

The second session continued with a presentation by Dian Lasvita entitled “How Original Series are Conceived, Created, and Developed”. On this occasion, Dian explained the creative process behind making the original Vidio series. Starting from the initial idea, creating scenarios, selecting actors, production, to editing and marketing. Story ideas can be taken from intellectual property (IP) such as films, books, soap operas, social media threads, etc. or original ideas in the form of stories around us or imagination. Next, the development stage can be carried out starting from the essence of the story, synopsis, story plot, to becoming a script.

At the production stage, cast selection, shooting, editing, and review of the final episode are carried out before it is released. Finally, the release of a series is carried out by launching a teaser and trailer first. Then, the official launch of the series and marketing are carried out so that consumers can enjoy the series that has been produced. “Every step that Vidio takes can be a new insight for friends who want to try making a short series,” explained Dian.

The activity, which was attended by more than 300 participants, consisted of high school students majoring in Multimedia and university students. Several high school/vocational school students who attended were from SMK Taman Siswa 1 Jakarta; SMAN 26 Jakarta; SMK Budi Luhur; SMAN 1 Depok; SMAI Al Azhar 19 Jakarta; SMAN 8 Jakarta; SMAN 61 Jakarta; SMAN 1 Bogor; SMK Paramitha 1; and SMKN 2 Cibinong. Sabir Adha Sofari, a student at SMAN 8 Jakarta, revealed that he received new insights through this community service activity. “I learned many new things from the speakers. This activity has further encouraged me to delve deeper into the world of the creative media industry,” explained Sabir.

Apart from that, Rangga said that the community service activity held with the Media Production Student Association (HIMPRODIA) aimed to educate participants about how OTT services work as streaming services in Indonesia. “I hope that this event will provide many benefits and insights to participants about media production, especially in the context of OTT, film and advertising. Apart from that, this activity also strengthens collaboration between UI and Vidio in creating innovative and educational content for the community,” concluded Rangga.
