Depok – The tourism sector in Indonesia is currently experiencing an increase and is starting to become a concern for the government. The 10 New Bali destinations launched by the government, for example, encourage the tourism sector to move quickly to capture market interest. This certainly has an impact on the needs of workers in this sector. Responding to these needs, the UI Vocational Education Program presents a renewed focus on the Tourism Study Program, which focuses on the tourism and MICE (Meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) business “We focus our graduates on the field of Travel Business and MICE because indeed progress in this field is very rapid. Tourist visits to Indonesia are even predicted to break through the 20 million mark until 2019,” said Dr. Budiman Mahmud Musthofa, S.Sos., M.Si the Tourism Study Program aims to produce Tourism Associate Experts who are able to manage the tourism and event business professionally. The curriculum applied emphasizes practice (70% practice and 30% theory). Graduates of the Tourism Vocational Education Program will have the main competencies in the field of tourism travel, namely:
- Able to operate a travel service business
- Able to apply management concepts in tourism business activities
- Able to apply the concept of service in carrying out tourism business activities
- Able to use spoken and written language in Indonesian and English in travel business activities
- Able to apply socio-cultural and ecological concepts in tourism business activities
- Able to apply tourism professional ethics in their work
- Able to apply information technology in tourism
After participating in the entire learning process for 6 semesters, graduates will obtain a minimum of 1 competency certificate from the Professional Certification Institute (LSP) P1 University of Indonesia which is valid nationally and internationally in addition to a diploma in Diploma Three Tourism with the title of Tourism Associate Expert (Amd.Par). Budiman added, to support learning, Tourism Vocational collaborates with the Association of Indonesian Travel Companies known as the Association of the Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (
ASITA). ASITA is an association that accommodates entrepreneurs or business actors in the field of tourism travel services in Indonesia. Cooperation is also established with the Indonesian Exhibition Company Association (ASPERAPI), the Indonesian Recreational Park Business Association (PUTRI) and various other associations. “With this collaboration, students can do internships at companies under the auspices of these associations, besides that the study program also receives periodic input about the needs in the tourism industry so that it can be adapted in the curriculum,” said Budiman From the MICE side, Tourism Expert and Head of the Social Studies Division of Vocational Humanities UI Mr. Dr. Drs. Jajang Gunawijaya, M.A. said that the big cities of Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, Makassar, Manado, and Bali. Indonesia has a huge potential to dominate MICE tourism in Southeast Asia because it has so many venues. “MICE tourism is an activity that brings in seven times more tourists than conventional tourism in one event,” concluded Jajang.
