Depok-The Family Women’s Association (IWK) of the Vocational Education Program, Universitas Indonesia (UI), has just held a chunky bag making workshop on September 24, 2024. Taking place in the UI Vocational Intraco Room, the activity involving female academicians of UI Vocational in collaboration with Riang Kala Luang, a community or forum that provides space to explore oneself in the field of handicrafts. The workshop invited members of the UI Vocational IWK to learn to knit chunky bags, which are handcrafted bags made from large yarn (chunky yarn) without a sewing process.

The Head of UI Vocational IWK, Dewi Anggraini, said that the activity was one of the programs carried out by UI Vocational IWK to strengthen relations between members. In addition, the chunky bag creation can also be used as a substitute for plastic, so the workshop also encourages academics to be aware of reducing the use of plastic every day. Dewi emphasized, “Various programs carried out by UI Vocational IWK also serve as a forum for female academics of UI Vocational to increase their knowledge and skills. One of them is a chunky bag making workshop like this which can create creativity for them in making handicrafts that can be used as commercial products.”
Founded in 2023, Riang Kala Luang was inspired by its members’ love for handicrafts and the desire to share the benefits. Riang Kala Luang is here as a motivator for someone to remain productive even in their free time and is the first step for anyone who wants to pursue handicrafts. The various types of activities that Riang Kala Luang has carried out are macrame strap bags, chunky bags, twist balloon bouquets, bubble balloon bouquets, mirror foam, candle art, money flower bouquets, and others.

Dewi added that the workshop activity is also a form of support for female academicians of UI Vocational to relieve stress and develop entrepreneurial skills. “Hopefully this workshop activity can be utilized by members of UI Vocational IWK to be creative and become a place to channel hobbies and promising fashion businesses,” concluded Dewi.
