Located at the Margo Hotel, Depok, Professor of Transportation at the Faculty of Engineering UI Prof. Dr. Ir Sigit Pranowo Hadiwardoyo DEA launched a book entitled “Roads and Transportation Infrastructure Development Models”. This launch is also a momentum for 32 years of service by the French graduate professor.
The activity was attended by all top leaders of UI and other universities as well as industry players, including Highways, Ministry of Defense, Hutama Karya and Intraco.
“This book is presented so that it can be used as an introduction to the study of land, sea and air transportation infrastructure, which is expected to build creativity and ideas in the development of the transportation sector. This book contains the author’s observations and the research of contributors while attending doctoral studies at the University of Indonesia, and partner universities from France and Portugal,” said Sigit, who also serves as the director of the UI Vocational Program, Wednesday (30/5).
The Rector of the University of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Ir Muhammad Anis, who opened the launch of this book, said that the book containing the idea of Road Feasibility Audit is an urgent need to be realized, considering the increasingly crucial role and function of roads in transportation activities in Indonesia. Moreover, roads are one of the vital infrastructures for a country, especially Indonesia, in supporting the improvement of the economy and people’s welfare. 
“This book is a manifestation of the excellence of one of the nation’s children who is able to make scientific works that penetrate the elite ranks of international journals. Prof. Sigit is one of the role models among academics because he has succeeded in proving that ideas from Indonesia have been accepted by the world community,” said Dr. Devie Rahmawati, head of the UI Communication Vocational Study Program. In one of his works, Sigit explained data from the Central Bureau of Statistics 1988-2015 which showed that the increase in the number of vehicles from year to year fluctuated both for passenger cars and buses, trucks and motorcycles. The road length growth statistics during 1988-2016 averaged 3.42 percent, compared to the growth of vehicles in the same years where the growth rate averaged 10.22 percent. The ratio of the number of vehicles to the length of roads in Indonesia is not the highest in Southeast Asian countries although it is still higher than neighboring countries (Malaysia and the Philippines). However, when compared to several developed countries, the availability of road infrastructure in Indonesia is still far behind the United States, Japan and Germany. In these countries the ratio is very low, and this figure shows the high accessibility of the road network in those countries. However, the measure of transportation accessibility is not solely measured by the length of the road but also the road conditions. In Indonesia, not all existing roads are in good condition. As is well known, road conditions greatly determine the size of travel costs in their function as a link between the movement of goods and services in their role in the economy.
