Depok-The Occupational Therapy study program within the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Vocational Education Program continues to innovate in producing internationally competitive healthcare professionals. Through the concept of “Bridging Tradition and Innovation,” UI Vocational presents a national culture-based curriculum fully integrated with the global standards of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT). <\/p>\n

This study program developed the Batik Indonesian National Occupational Therapy Educational Curriculum<\/em> (BINOTEC) as the primary metaphor for the learning process. This curriculum interprets the educational process as batik\u2014starting from a plain piece of cloth to a masterpiece<\/em>. Each layer of learning is designed to produce graduates who are professional, possess integrity, possess depth of knowledge, and are sensitive to the Indonesian cultural context. <\/p>\n

The Director of the UI Vocational Education Program, Dr. Safrin Arifin, SKM., S.St., M.Sc., emphasized that strengthening this curriculum is key to addressing the challenges of future healthcare services.<\/p>\n

“We are directing the curriculum development at UI Vocational to address real community needs and global professional standards. Integrating WFOT standards into BINOTEC is our strategy to produce graduates who are practice-ready, possess professional leadership skills, and are internationally mobile,” said Safrin.<\/p>\n

The learning structure is structured in stages over eight semesters, using a combination of Bloom’s<\/em> taxonomy and the batik metaphor. These stages include basic foundations in the first year, theoretical and clinical in-depth studies in the second and third years, and the Masterpiece stage in the fourth year. <\/p>\n

In the final phase, students undergo field internship rotations in various healthcare facilities, including rural areas, and complete a capstone project. UI Vocational requires more than 1,200 hours of clinical practice\u2014exceeding the minimum WFOT standards\u2014with a learning ratio of 60 percent practice to 40 percent theory. <\/p>\n

UI Vocational Occupational Therapy lecturer, Hermito Gidion, A.Md.OT., S.Psi., M.Psi.T., explained that the contextual approach is the main strength of UI Vocational graduates.<\/p>\n

“We train students to apply global standards to local situations. Even in communities with limited resources, they are still able to provide quality interventions through creativity, empathy, and sound clinical reasoning,” explained Hermito.<\/p>\n

This study program’s uniqueness also lies in its focus on “occupation,” or meaningful activity, as a therapeutic tool. It employs an evidence-based practice<\/em> approach comparable to therapeutic standards in developed countries like Canada or the Netherlands. Students are supported by 10 specialized laboratories (including virtual reality<\/em>) and access to 40 partner practice sites. <\/p>\n

Going forward, UI Vocational is directing the development of the Occupational Therapy 4.0 concept through the integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and strengthening the geriatrics field. This solidifies the position of the UI Vocational Occupational Therapy program as a center of excellence<\/em> in Southeast Asia. <\/p>\n
