Depok-Various efforts are made to increase tourism in Indonesia, especially in the Covid-19 pandemic period today. Like it or not, the government and tourism actors must continue to innovate along with the times and shifts in the behavior of tourists. One of the important roles is creative and innovative young generation in order to encourage the development of Indonesian tourism.

“The young generation who has competence in the tourism field is currently very much needed. The government began to appeal to labor in Indonesia to have competency certification issued by institutions that have authority in order to compete in the global market, especially in ASEAN (ASEAN Single Community), and fulfill the industry’s demands,” said Anisatul Auliya, SST.Par., M.Par., Community Service Team Head of the Tourism Business Management Study Program, Vocational Education Program of the Universitas Indonesia (UI) who conducted a seminar with the theme “Creating a Competent Young Generation in the Tourism Field” at SMK 24 Jakarta on March 28, 2022.

This activity was carried out in line with the appeal of the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to continue to encourage the quality improvement program of the Tourism. Febrian, M.Si., who is also a member of the UI Vocational Community Service Team said, “Competence is very much needed in the tourism industry, considering that the role of HR competency determines the progress of the organization in dealing with changes that occur.”

“These competencies can be achieved through various training and certification. It is also an effort to realize quality HR and in accordance with existing standards. With the debriefing of the competency, it will help the tourism industry in Indonesia continue to grow,” said Febrian.

In the seminar, it was filled with discussions from the practitioners of the UI Vocational Community Sercvice Team guided by Mahadewi S.Sos., M.M. In addition, students are introduced to the tourism industry in Indonesia, exposure of tourism science, the linkage of tourism with other sciences, tourism philosophy, to the current tourism paradigm shift. Another member of the community service team, Army Tunggu Harwanto, S.E., M.Par., said that the cultural diversity in Indonesia could be an attraction for the community to travel, both local and foreign tourists.

“Tourism science has multidisciplinary links with other science, such as management, business, economics, culture, and others. Through various multidisciplinary science and culture in Indonesia, it can be collaborated and used as an effort to improve the country’s economy by tourism and creative economy,” said Army.

It was also equipped with competency certification material and received a warm welcome from the Deputy Principal of the Department of Masculgence of SMKN 24 Jakarta Elvi Irawati, S.Pd. “We are very grateful to the UI Vocational that provides an introduction to the tourism industry in Indonesia and the competencies needed to our students. We hope to continue working with UI Vocational to hold other activities in the future.”

The Director of the UI Vocational Education Program, Padang Wicaksono, SE., Ph.D, fully supports every community service program carried out by the UI Vocational academic community. “These community service programs are a form of UI Vocational contribution to improve the quality of human resources in Indonesia. In connection with the need for HR competencies, especially in the tourism sector, UI Vocational School also has a Professional Certification Institute with tourism schemes such as Liaison Officer Specialist, Tour Guidance, Public Speaking, and others.”
