Depok – Records and Archives Management Study Program (MRA) Vocational Education Program, Universitas Indonesia held a public lecture with the theme “Contribution of Digital Archives to Big Data”. The public lecture was held at the Auditorium of Vocational Education Program, presented a speaker Ismail Fahmi, PhD, a technology practitioner who focuses on the development of big data. The company, which was founded by a doctor at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, is better known as Drone Emprit, which often captures the latest conversation findings on social media using big data analysis. With this analysis, it can be found the facts that occur so that anticipatory steps can be taken.
“We are catching up with the 4.0 era so that students must always be updated on the development of information technology and its relation to record and archival studies,” said Dyah Safitri, Head of the Records and Archives Management Study Program. In an interactive and interesting presentation, Ismail Fahmi highlighted that the world is currently entering the era of free and open access. “Indonesia should not be outdated because digital material objects from GLAM (Gallery, Library, Archive, and Museum) are available and archive software and search engine portals are open based,” said Ismail Fahmi. As the initiator of Indonesia OneSearch (IOS), he added that IAOS (Indonesia Archive One Search) really needs to be built to integrate archive collections into one stop destination for archival materials. “The key is synergy and mutual collaboration to provide free and open access services for all Indonesian people,” added the man born in Bojonegoro. This synergy and collaboration, of course, involves all stakeholders so that the results are maximized.
In Ismail Fahmi’s view, the simplest definition of big data is that the size or volume of data is very large, data continues to grow rapidly, and data formats, some are structured but some are unstructured. So, from the beginning when a solution about archiving will be built, for example, digital archives will certainly make a big contribution to big data. Of course, this is a new insight for students who take public lectures that even existing digital archives clearly make a big contribution to big data. Big data can be free and open access solution in the GLAM field, including in the world of archives, where each organization has its own peculiarities in managing archives including digital archives.
With this public lecture, it is hoped that students of the Vocational Education Program, especially the Records and Archives Management study program, can get new insights and insights on how broad the possibilities are for them to explore archives, especially digital archives, including their contribution to big data analysis. This public lecture also provides an overview of the extent to which MRA Study Program graduates can work, including in the data sector as data scientists or big data analysis, which are of course very much needed by a number of government and private institutions.
