Brisbane – Located at Tafe Queensland, Devie Rahmawati and Westri, Australian Awards recipients visited Tafe, one of the Vocational Higher Education in Queensland, Australia. Tafe has more than 90 study programs from 15 study areas and more than 500 certification training. Visits are carried out in classrooms and practical laboratories.

“Vocational Schools in Australia are the main ticket to getting high-earning jobs. One of the professions, D3 / D4 (Applied S1) graduates actually earn around 100-150 thousand a year, while workers who graduate with academic undergraduate earn around 55 thousand dollars a year, ‘said Devie Rahmawati, Chair of the University of Indonesia (UI) Public Relations Vocational Study Program).

“A study released by the McCrindle Research and Skilling Australia Foundation states that 68% of Academic graduates find jobs after graduating from university. Meanwhile, 92% of Vocational graduates have found jobs, even when they have just finished their class. This happens because they have been doing practical work since they were studying, ”exclaimed Devie. activists of the Vocational Digital Clinic. “The conditions are different in Australia, many of the undergraduate academic graduates, after graduating, return to study in Vocational Studies to get a certificate or D3 / D4 education. This is driven by industrial demand in Australia, for the main qualifications which are job skills, “added Devie.

“Based on the results of discussions with several professionals in Australia, there is no dichotomy between Vocational and Academic education. It’s just that, here, everyone is encouraged to focus on their interests, to take studies that are relevant to their abilities and desires for a career in the future. Vocational Education is intended for individuals who really want a career as a professional in the industry. Meanwhile, academic education is aimed at individuals who want to take a walk as a teacher and researcher, for example. However, that does not mean there is a rigid separation between the two educations. Vocational graduates can also take academic education to enrich theoretical knowledge. Meanwhile, academic graduates will take vocational education to gain professional skills, “said Devie.

Building professional vocational education is not easy. The Australian Government does provide policy and financial support for Vocational education. “Vocational school facilities are very complete. The number of students per class is limited, around 10-20 students. Thus every child can really use the practical tools in their entirety. It is different from the academic class, where the study materials are in the form of theory, so that several large classes can accommodate up to 100 students, “added Devie.

The design of classrooms really resembles the actual conditions in the workplace. This ensures that the graduates are ready to work in industry. Because there is no gap between the material provided on campus and the situation in the industry. Not only that, teachers in Vocational education, also have the obligation to follow developments in the industry, by working in the industry for a certain period on a regular basis.
Public Relations Study Program, Vocational Education Program, one of the study programs at Universitas Indonesia, which continues to learn and develop programs and curricula that bring industrial practice closer to studying on campus.

“Apart from having adequate classrooms and laboratories, since 2018, we have implemented the 3-2-1 curriculum as a whole, where our students have been practicing in the industry since semesters 4, 5 and 6. They are in the industry not as apprentices. , but doing the latest work practices with industry mentors, which has made many public relations vocational graduates have been asked to work, even though they have not graduated from vocational education, “said Devie.

“As in Australia, the teachers in Vocational Education are professional practitioners. Call it Dian Sastrowardoyo, Shanty Harmayn, Sheila Timothy, Dimas Beck, Yoris Sebastian (OMG), Holy Theodore (Google); William Utomo (IDN Media), Michael Tampi (MRA Media), Stevanus Christopel (OVO), Michael Koentjoro (Jenius), Edwin Nazir (Fortuna Sinema), Sandru Emil (Ambilhati), Michael Reza (Gojek), Uun Ainurofiq (Grab) , Wisnu Nugrahadi (Sampingan), Edward Tirtanata (Kopi Kenangan), Theresian Rustandi, Ongki Saputra (Traveloka), Wahyu Dhyatmika (Tempo), Aswin Utomo (Tokopedia), Hendrika Gaudens (Microsoft), and Wahyu Wiwoho (Metro TV), ” closed Devie Rahmawati.
